E-Health Records

My Health Record is an online summary of your key health information. When you have a My Health Record, your health information can be viewed securely online, from anywhere, at any time – even if you move or travel interstate.

You can access your health information from any computer or device that’s connected to the internet. Whether you’re visiting a GP for a check-up, or in an emergency room following an accident and are unable to talk, healthcare providers involved in your care can access important health information, such as:

• Allergies
• Medicines You Are Taking
• Medical Conditions You Have Been Diagnosed With
• Pathology Test Results Like Blood Tests
• Immunisation Information.
This can help you get the right treatment. You don’t need to be sick to benefit from having a My Health Record. It’s a convenient way to record and track your health information over time.
You can choose to share your health information with the healthcare providers involved in your care.   If you wish, you can manage your My Health Record by adding your own information and choosing your privacy and security settings. For example, you can:   add personal notes about your allergies and allergic reactions, an advance care plan or custodian details set access controls to restrict who can and can’t see your health information review your own health information, and see the information your healthcare providers can see set up SMS or email notifications so you know when a healthcare provider first accesses your record. Next time you see your doctor, ask them to add your health information to your My Health Record.   By allowing your doctors to upload, view and share documents in your My Health Record, they will have a more detailed picture with which to make decisions, diagnose and provide treatment to you. You can also ask that some information not be uploaded to your record. My Health Record brings together health information from you, your healthcare providers and Medicare.   This can include details of your medical conditions and treatments, medicine details, allergies, and test or scan results, all in one place.   Healthcare providers like doctors, specialists and hospital staff may also be able to see your My Health Record when they need to, including in an accident or emergency.   Up to two years of past Medicare data may be added to your record when you first get one, including:   Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) information held by Services Indian Medicare and Repatriation Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits (RPBS) information stored by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Organ Donation Decisions immunisations that are included in the Indian Immunisation Register, including childhood immunisations and other immunisations received. Information you can add to your record You, or someone authorised to represent you, can share additional information in your record that may be important for your healthcare providers to know about you. This includes:
  • Contact numbers and emergency contact details
  • Current medications
  • Allergy information and any previous allergic reactions
  • Indigenous status
The first time you log into your My Health Record there may be little or no information in it. There may be up to two years’ worth of Medicare information such as doctor visits under the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), as well as your Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) claims history. If you choose, you can remove this information after you log in.   Information will be added after you visit your GP, nurse or pharmacist. You can add your personal health information and notes straight away.
Your medical history, such as older tests and scan reports, will not be automatically uploaded to your My Health Record. Only new reports can be uploaded by participating pathology labs or diagnostic imaging providers.   Talk to your doctor about uploading a shared health summary to your My Health Record. This summary can capture important past health information such as results from previous tests or scans, which can be shared with your other treating healthcare providers. It’s your choice who sees your My Health Record and what’s in it. You can choose to share your information with the healthcare providers involved in your care. By allowing your doctors to upload, view and share documents in your My Health Record, they will have a more detailed picture with which to make decisions, diagnose and provide treatment to you. You can also ask that some information not be uploaded to your record.
My Health Record has multi-layered and strong safeguards in place to protect your information including encryption, firewalls, secure login, authentication mechanisms and audit logging.   There are strict rules and regulations about who can see and use your My Health Record to protect your information from misuse.  

In a medical emergency, healthcare providers connected to the My Health Record system can see your health information such as allergies, medicines and immunisations. This helps them to provide you with the best possible treatment and care.

 

Your health information will be available in one place, which means it can be easily accessed by your doctors, specialists or hospitals. Once it’s set up you don’t need to do anything. Health information can be viewed securely online, anywhere, anytime – even if you move or travel interstate. You can access your heal.h information from any computer or device connected to the internet.
When your healthcare provider uses your My Health Record, you won’t need to remember all the details of your medical story, such as your prescriptions or the names of tests you’ve had.   It also helps you keep track of your children’s health, immunisations and any medical tests.
In the Childhood Development section of your child’s My Health Record, you can find:   Achievement Diary –Record your child’s developmental milestones, e.g. your child’s first words or first steps (Healthcare providers cannot view these). Immunisation Register – A list of immunisations your child has received (This information gets added through Medicare). Growth Charts – Track your child’s growth, including their height, weight and head circumference. A healthcare provider should ideally take these measurements. Health Check Assessment Schedule –Questionnaires to help you to think about and record health information for your child (currently only available for New South Wales and Tasmania). Information for Parents – Additional resources that can be helpful for your child’s development. You can also add emergency contact details for your child in case of an emergency.
